1998 Broncos 30 - 1992 49ers 17

The Broncos win the Whippersnapper Bracket, with a solid and hard fought 30 - 17 victory over a very tough Niners squad. John Elway was effective, and a good thing too, as the Niners came as close as anyone has to containing Terrell Davis, holding him to under 4 yards per carry.

Denver opened with two good drives to take a 10 - 0 lead. The Niners were stopped cold on their first two possessions, and when Denver got the ball for the third time it looked a little like a blowout was brewing. Nuh uh. Elway threw and interception, setting up a San Francisco TD, They were able to tack on another FG, but the Niners came back with a drive that was almost too easy, taking a 14 - 13 lead. The Broncos were able to add another TD before the half, and stopped the 49ers on downs right before the gun to hold a 20 - 14 lead.

Denver tallied another TD on their first 2nd half possession on a 9 yard Davis run, while the 49ers added a Cofer FG. After an exchange of punts the Broncs scored the final points of the game on an Elam FG. The 49ers drove to the Bronco 24 with 5 minutes left, but Ray Crockett snuffed out the rally with an interception in the end zone, and that pretty much settled the game

1959 Giants 30 - 1967 Colts

I guess you can't stop Giants TE Bob Schnelker*, you can only hope to contain him. Fresh off of his destruction of the mighty 1962 Packers Schnelker repeated his performance by catching 3 passes for 134 yards against the 67 Colts, spearheading a win, and securing the Championship of the Topscribe bracket for the 1959 New York Football Giants.

The two teams were a good match, and similar in some ways. The Colts have a great QB in Unitas, while the Giants have a good QB in Conerly. This is offset by a great Giants defense matched against a good one for Baltimore, and both teams struggle in the run game. The Colts took an early 7-0 lead on a pass to John Mackey, which was matched in the second quarter as Schnelker took a short Conerly pass 74 yards for an answering TD. The Colts shakey FG kicker missed two opportunities,, while the Giants were able to cobble together another TD drive for a 14-7 halftime lead. The Colts moved into FG range again, and this time Michaels connected, but the Giants answered with a Summerall kick. Afer holding the Colts, the Conerly threw for Schnelker in the flat, and beat the Baltimore blitz for a 48 yard pickup, setting up a Summerall kick from the two. Yes, I kicked the FG. Yes, it was the right call, because it made for a two score lead, the Giants RB's are weak, and the Colts run D turns brutal inside the ten.

The Colts added another FG, but the Giants were able to mount another drive, and this time Phil King crashed in from the 1 yard line and a 27 - 13 lead with 7 minutes left. It only took Unitas a little over two minutes to score a TD on a 38 yard throw to Alex Hawkins, and they were able to hold the Giants. Unfortunately for Baltimore a strip sack and recovery by New York set up a final short FG, and that was the Dagger.

* Bob Schnelker is now almost completely forgotten, but in 1959 he had 37 catches for a better than 19 yard per catch average in a 12 game season. He may not be in Canton, but he is no stiff. Don't let anyone tell you pass catching TE's were invented in the 1960's!
