1980 Eagles 20 - 1973 Dolphins 17

This one was a well played defensive game, and an upset. The Eagles took advantage of an early Griese interception to race out to a 10 - 0 Lead, but after holding Miami on their next drive fumbled away a punt return. this set up a mercury Morris TD scamper around left end. Miami added a FG in the second to know the score, and that was about it for scoring until late in the game. The eaglestook advantage of a 24 yard punt return into Miami territory, then benefitted from a personal foul on little used RB Louis Giammona after he broke an 18 yard run. The Eagles cashed in with a go ahead score. The Dolphins drove methodically down the field, and were facing a 3rd and goal at the two. The Eagles D blasted Larry Csonka two yards behind the line of scrimmage and forced a fumble....which was scooped up by Guard Jim Langer and run in for the tying TD. With a little over 3 minutes left Ron Jaworski hit Charlie Smith with a 40 yard fly pattern, and the Eagles drove inside the Miami five with a minute left. At this time I came within an Ace od outsmarting myself. I had Ron Jaworski kneel twice to run the clock down to :15 seconds. I had not scouted my own FG kicker. Tony Franklin is barely better than a 50/50 shot from inside the ten! He made the kick, thankfully, but I would have felt like an idiot had I lost this game due to my own stupidity. The Eagles won't go too far IMO. The FG kicker is terrible, and the offense doesn't do a lot all that well, though Jaworski is a dangerous long passer. The defense is extremely stout, especially versus the pass, and was certainly good enough to shut down the Dolphins merely average passing attack while concentrating on stuffing the running game.
