1959 Giants 26 - 1969 Chiefs 17

The first half saw a back and forth struggle, with a slight edge to the Giants as they held a 13 - 10 lead at the gun. The first drive of the second half saw the pivotal sequence of plays. The Giants moved to midfield, and Conerly hit TE Bob Schnelcker for a 22 yard pass - which Schelcker fumbled away. Unfortunately for KC Len Dawson's ugly interception rate finally reared its ugly head, as the Giants picked him off and ran the ball back to the 13, scoring a TD soon thereafter for a 20 - 10 lead. The next KC possession saw Dawson throw another interception, leading to a Summerall FG. Early in the fourth Dawson regained his composure long enough to retaliate with a 56 yard TD pass to Frank Pitts, but the Giants finally mounted something like a running attack as Frank Gifford ripped off a pair of ten yard runs and a 24 yard run from FB Phil King to add another FG. The next KC possesion came to an end with their third turnover of the half, this one a fumble, and that was the end of that.

Neither ground game could get untracked in this game, but I think that was more of a problem for KC than NY. The KC passing attack is splendid, but it needs to be used sparingly due to Dawson's 7% interception rate. In previous tournament games this is what they have been able to do, but with HB Mike Garrett et al. putting in a lifeless performance the Chiefs were forced to pass more often than they would prefer, and it finally bit them in the ass.
