1963 Chargers 27 - 1965 Browns 23

Over 480 yards running combined by these two teams. Three running backs over 100 yards. The Browns came pretty close to knocking off the powerful 63 Chargers, but came up a touch short, betrayed by their own terrible defense and QB Frank Ryan's drive killing performance.

The Chargers moved the ball with ease almost throughout, but suffered a couple of turnovers, a missed FG, a coach who thought he had a timeout left at the end of the second quarter I(d'oh!), and some ill timed misses by QB Tobin Rote - all of which led to lots of yards and 20 points late in the 4th - and a three point deficit after Jim Brown tore through the Chargers defense on a 34 yard off tackle midway through the 4th. The Bolts were able to mount yet another drive, and this one paid off with a Gil McDougall TD run with 4 minutes left. The Browns mounted a drive in return, moving to around the SD 30 with 1:30. After a Ryan incompletion the Chargers called probably their only pas blitz of the day (you don't pass rush a team with Jim Brow if you are smart) and it paid off as Ryan was sacked, and missed on two desperation throws on 3rd and 4th and 17.

Two powerful offenses faced one very poor (Browns) and one merely adequate (Chargers) defenses. The Browns D was eventually going to get them bounced, but they came awfully close to bouncing my pre tournament favorite in this bracket.
