1969 Chiefs 27 = 1985 Bears 13

Now this was an upset, and one of the better games I've played. How do you beat the 85 Bears? It can be done. First, get a lead. An early 70 yard TD strike from Len Dawson to Otis Taylor is helpful. Next, hang on for dear life. The 85 Bears are not especially good at playing from behind, as McMahon fades in the face of a pass defense determined to stop him, and the Bears pass blocking is quite weak. having a defense only a couple of notches weaker than the Bears helps too. Pick off a couple of passes. Then, its especially useful to have little waterbug HB Warren McVea bust a 71 yard end run to blow the thing open. Have a sound plan, then get lucky. Thats the ticket.

Len Dawson was a brilliant 11 for 12 and over 180 yards, including the 70 yarder. I mentioned before that 69 Dawson is extremely deadly but throws interceptions by the bucketful. Once I had a lead I simply stopped throwing save for an odd throw on 3rd and one or such. On Third and Longs I was completely content to run a 3 yard draw play and then punt rather than risk disaster. The Bears simply don't have that much passing firepower, and the Chiefs run defense can at least keep WalterPayton slowed down
