1962 Packers 31 - 1966 Cowboys 17

I had thought the 66 Pokes might be able to knock off the Packers. Might. their defense is excellent against both pass and run, and they have a big play offense that when it gains yards tends to do it in big chunks - a good thing in this case, because a ball control offense is unlikely to do much against the Packers.

Well, Dallas got off to a great start. Dan Reeves took a handoff for 15, then Meredith hit a 12 yard pass, and then another short pass to "Bullet Bob" Hayes turned into a 48 yard TD play. The Cowboys managed a couple of stops and led 7 - 0 after one.

Starting in the second period the Packers did what they do so well; they pounded, and pounded, and pounded with Jim taylor and a variety of good HB's, grinding out first downs at 4 to 5 yards a run, with Starr periodically keeping the Cowboys honest with an accurate passing game. It wasn't flashy - just methodical, and the pack took a 14-7 lead. the Cowboys mounted a nice drive of their own to set up a Villanueva FG with @ :30 left, but Tom Moore took the ensuing kickoff 77 yards, and set up a packer FG and a 17 - 10 lead.

In the second half the shakey Cowboy pass blocking collapsed entirely, as Meredith wento down on his can five times to stymie any comeback effort. And the packers? Off tackle. Up the middle. Short pass. Up the middle. Off tackle. On and on they ground to an insurmountable 31 - 10 lead. Craig Morton came in and led a nice TD drive against a prevent defense, but it was window dressing, and the Packers move on to face 1980 Philly
