1968 Colts 10 - 1972 Dolphins 9

In the Great battle of Earl Morralls both versions showed pretty poorly. Baltimore's Earl Morrall hit 40% of his passes, with no TD's, and 4 interceptions. Miami's Earl Morrall was even worse; he only threw 2 interceptions, but was good for only 5 of 18 passing and 37 net yards. It was a gruesome showing for two very good QB's. Of course, the fact that these were two legendary defenses played heavily into this as well, and I might even match up 68 Baltimore with 85 Chicago.

Miami was able to use their dominating ground attack to maintain a lead for much of the game - they are such a machine that even the Colts Excellent run defense was only able to contain them rather than stop them outright - but contain them they did, restricting Miami's scoring to three Garo Yepremian FG's. Late in the 4th the Colts, down 9 - 3, managed to drive to the Miami 11, but threw their 4th interception of the game to give Miami the ball at the 5 with 3 minutes left. This time the Colts stoned Csonka and Morris, and forced a 3 and out. Miami punter Larry Seiple's punt only covered 34 yards, and Rick Volk returned it 17 yards to put the Colts back in business. The Colts hit a 16 yard pass to Tom Matte to set them up with 1st and goal at the two - and three plays later it was 4th and goal at the 4. At this point I went counterintuitive - having little faith in throwing into the Dolphins pass defense I ran handy backup halfback Timmy Brown around end, and the the Col;ts took the lead with :30 left. Ballgame over.
