1984 49ers 31 - 1963 Bears 24

A tough loss for the Bears...and oh so close, as the 49ers picked off a Billy Wade pass at their own 5 with :30 to seal the win.

The Bears got off to a quick 7 point lead off of a long fumble return for a TD. Billy Wade was almost sensational for the Bears, helped by a 74 yard rumble off a flat pass by Mike Dika, who no doubt must have bowled over any number of defenders before being run down inside the ten, and Johnny Morris who took a short crossing pattern for 47 yards. The Bears sluggish running backs were unable to add much, while the 49ers Wendell Tyler and Roger Craig gouged the Bears run defense more successfully than I would have thought they could.

The biggest story of the game IMO was the proverbial "dog that didn't bark." The Bears are the best intercepting team in all of Strat's catalogue. It is their most distinctive feature. In this one they didn't manage to swipe any of Joe Montana's passes, in part because Montana threw only one deep ball all day, a 27 yarder to Mike Wilson. The Bears defense is terrifying, but if you manage to not turn the ball over they are quite beatable. Its a big If.
