1998 Broncos 31 - 1992 Cowboys 17

The Broncos exploded out of the chutes, with Vaughn Hebron taking the opening kickoff 97 yards for a TD. After a good Dallas drive sparked by a 41 yard dash by Emmitt Smith Lin Elliot had his FG attempt blocked. The Broncos went nowhere, but the Cowboys fumbled the bal away on a strip sack, handing the ball to Denver at the 11. A quick TD pass to Shannon Sharpe upped the lead to 14-0. The Cowboys responded with another good drive, but were forced to settle for three, and on the ensuing possession Terrell Davis broke around left end for a 63 yard run, setting up a 14 yard TD pass to Willie Green as the Quarter expired.

Afer another Broncos hold, Derrick Loville gave the Cowboys some life by fumbling the ball away at the Denver 20, and Emmitt Smith tookit in a few plays later from 3 yards out. Denver retaliated 5 miutes later though as a long pass to Ed McCaffery set up a 5 yard TD run for Terrell Davis.

Apart from a 3rd quarter FG by Elam, and a TD run late by Smith that was it for the scoring. I played exteremelt cautiously in the second half, running clock and playing 5 DB's - essentially conceding the run if Dallas wanted to do that and double teaming the blazes out of Michael Irvin. The object was to prevent big plays, and it worked. Aikman is good, not great, especially against a defense keyed to stopping him. With a 3 score lead I could mostly ignore the run.

This game had me worried, as the 92 Cowboys are very formidable, but it sure helps to get staked to 14 early points on only 11 yards offense! The Broncos great vulnerability is a weak pass defense, so getting up early is a key to success, as is setting up Elway and the passing game with a strong running attack. Its a great offense to hold a lead with.
