The 86 Bears are a lot like the 85 Bears, with the exception that they are plagued with poor Quarterbacking. The 68 Colts have a very solid Earl Morrall at the helm, and a defense every bit as good as the Bears. The Bears picked off Morrall four times anyways, enough to keep them in the game, but their own QBing couldn't pull off the upset, and they go home. The Colts started strong, and ran up a 20 - 7 halftime lead. The only Bears TD came as a result of one of those Ints, as the Bears got down inside the ten - and between Walter Payton and Matt Suhey they can grind out short yardage redzone TD's better than almost anyone. In the Second half I got frustrated with an ineffectual Jim McMahon and brought in Mike Tomczak, who got things going in the right direction with passes to Kieth Ortego and a 55 yard bomb to Willie Gault. The problem is that when you get down to it Tomczak sucks, just like McMahon sucks, and he reverted to form after the Bears had closed to a 27 - 21 deficit, throwing three Interceptions of his own. The Colts for their part kept scoring, one on a return of one of the Tomczak picks, and won this one pretty handily. One of the things I love about this game is that it accounts for the effects of good or poor run blocking. A little over 10% of all running play results are determined by the caliber of the run blocking, rather than the defense or running backs. In this game those numbers seemed to come up constantly for the Colts, who have very average runners but superb run blockers. RB's who aren't especially dangerous kept ripping off 6, 7, and 8 yards runs courtesy of LT Bob Vogel and company, and they kept the Colts offense on the field an awful lot against an extremely stout run defense. |
